Dell Laptop – Bios default settings Reboots XP

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mohan Achar @ 11:26 pm

Little did I realize that setting default settings in BIOS would cause the Windows XP not to boot. When I searched in the web, it provided info such as Dll failures, registry repairs, reinstalls XP etc. You would want to believe them that its Windows XP’s fault, cos Ubuntu Live Cd worked like a charm. When i tried to reinstalling  XP, an automatic restart happened after the windows files were copied. Made me feel that i can never install Xp in the system now.

It stuck me suddenly that some SATA harddrives are not supported by XP & Bios has a work around to let XP identify the HDD through different module. Browsed through the Bios & ensured i changed the HDD settings to SATA + X & Resolved IT…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mohan Achar @ 1:55 pm

i cant believe how easy things are in ubuntu, but then its just matter of searching for fixes when it comes to small bugs. keeps me glued to the OS

Anyways, my problem was that i have never used webcam in ubuntu & specially in skype. away from family for couple of weeks so wanted to setup my cisco vt camera to be able to video conf in skype. i was surpirsed that minute i plugged in the cam i say in

skype -> options -> video devices  i saw “UVC Camera (046d:08c7)(/dev/video0)

i was excited & thought wow, 100 times simpler than windows webcam installation[those who have cisco vt cam & do not have the driver cd – you know the pain)

but then my smile was short lived when i clicked test nothing showed up.

followed the blog http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-913832.html which lead me to http://blog.larsstrand.org/article.php?story=Linux_and_LogitechQuickCamPro9000

where i had to do nothing cos my drivers were already there & just got to know that luvcview is good tool to know if webcam is working & it was for me

High & no nothing shed me the light as to where the problem was then i

Resolved It!! by adding  bash -c ‘LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype’ to System -> preferences -> Main Menu -> applications > internet -> skype -> properties-> command. closed it relaunched skype & Whola webcam worked.

Note: Dont remember where i got the solution but, To whom it may concern “Thank you”

Webex in Firefox on Ubuntu

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mohan Achar @ 6:46 am

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 [dont know of a reason why the following wont work in the prev editions]

First to make webex work in fire fox i had to install the following[with firefox browser closed]

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin & then install libstdc++5 [need to manually download the deb for 9.10 cos libstdc++5 is not support in 9.10; down deb here http://packages.debian.org/etch/i386/libstdc++5/download%5D

added these two line to  profile file

vi  ~/.profile

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.15
export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH

**check for your jvm path & version number before adding the first line & Restart X server

Now things were smooth & working suddenly 1 day i got java not working when i accessed webex & then I

SOLVEDIT BY…. running “sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts” seems like my java plugin was uninstalled during one of the package updates

MY Windows XP bootup is slow

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mohan Achar @ 6:25 am

Step 1 – remove all apps from startup [except probably your antivirus]

a. start -> run -> msconfig -> startup -> unchecked those i did not require -> OK

Step 2 – keep desktop clean.

a.  Ppl have this nagging habit of saving everything in desktop. **STOP IT** thats why you have the drives & folders. Putting things in desktop[unless they are shortcuts] is going to take a long time for th desktop to load, in turn making you feel the boot time is high[technically its not cos loading of desktop is login/profile loading time]

Step 3. Disable unnecessary services – http://www.optimizingpc.com/optimize/windowsservices.html [use services.msc for disabling not msconfig]

Step 4. Defragment [Start – Accessories -> System tools – Defragement]

Tip: Turn off screensaver & powersaving. defragmentation without interruption [even a mouse movement] will help you get the task done faster.

Step 5. reboot to see if it help

If it worked, good for you, it did not work for me so I,

SOLVEDIT BY………. Switching over to Ubuntu – fast boot, quick install, FREE, quick shut down easy to use.

I have found that most of the content for resolution is spread across many pages. this is my attempt to try giving my steps to resolution for my problems in a short simple way & hopefully it will help other who face the same problem
